The Chicago Bears have selected quarterback David Fales with the 183rd pick in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Fales was rated as the No. 78 overall prospect on the SB Nation top 200 big board, making him the sixth-highest rated quarterback, behind Zach Mettenberger, Derek Carr, Johnny Manziel, Blake Bortles and Teddy Bridgewater.

Coming out of San Jose State, Fales didn’t have the high profile of the five quarterbacks mentioned above. He oversaw an outstanding run of success for the Spartans, however. San Jose State finished 11-2 in 2012 to achieve its first-ever BCS ranking and first appearance in the AP top 25 since 1975.
The Spartans fell back to 6-6 in 2013, but Fales remained productive, passing for 4,189 yards and 33 touchdowns in his final season. Somewhat concerning was a drop in completion percentage from 2012 to 2013 -- 72.5 to 64.1 -- and an uptick in interceptions -- nine to 13.
Fales measured well during the Combine, but was overshadowed by other quarterbacks in attendance. His pro day provided him the opportunity to perform in front of scouts from more than 30 teams, where he completed all but one pass and was able to display the extent of his arm strength. Most reports suggested he put enough zip on his passes to quell concerns regarding his arm.
Alfie Crow at Jaguars blog Big Cat Country graded Fales, and determined that the quarterback should be a solid Day 2 pick:
David Fales shows accuracy, touch and anticipation in the short and intermediate areas of the field passing the football. He's a sound decision maker who's tough in the pocket and can throw on the run/pick up yards with his feet when necessary, but will struggle with his velocity down the field initially. He's a best fit in an up-tempo west-coast style offense that utilizes quick passes in the intermediate area with calculated shots down the field.
