NFL Draft results 2014: Bashaud Breeland selected by Redskins

Bashaud Breeland is headed to Washington after being selected in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

The Washington Redskins have drafted Clemson cornerback Bashaud Breeland with the 102nd pick of the 2014 NFL Draft. Breeland is ranked as the No. 61 overall player in this year's class on SB Nation's top 200 big board and eighth among all cornerbacks.

Breeland declared for the NFL Draft with a year left of eligibility. His junior season was easily his best. Breeland tallied 56 tackles (five for loss), two sacks and four interceptions among 10 passes defensed. He finished his college career with 136 tackles (8.5 for a loss), three sacks and six interceptions among 19 passes defensed.

He finished his career at Clemson with 24 starts in 37 games and had 159 tackles in that time, 8.5 of them for a loss. He intercepted six passes, had 20 pass break-ups, two forced fumbles and two quarterback pressures. The 6’0, 185 lb. defensive back should add an experienced presence with solid size on both defense and special teams.

Breeland is part of a strong class of cornerbacks. Over at Niners Nation, Tre Faaborg gave a detailed look prior to the draft at what Breeland brings to the table (written from the perspective of a 49ers fan):

Breeland would excel in a Cover-3 or Cover-4 scheme where he can use his press skills to cover routes down the sideline area and make plays on the ball. I wouldn’t say he can’t play zone or off-man coverage, it’s just not his strength at this point, but there wasn’t anything glaring that scared me off, either. I can see why the 49ers would like an aggressive player who attacks the run, is physical with receivers, and plays special teams.

The sky appears to be the limit for Breeland, provided he gets the right coaching. It’s unclear if he can become a starter as a rookie, but his skill set should allow him to make an immediate impact as a depth player or a nickel corner.
