2014 NFL Draft day 3 results: Texans land Pittsburgh QB Tom Savage

Savage is the sixth true passer to go off the board, taken by Houston with the No. 135 pick.

The fourth round of the NFL Draft wrapped up with compensatory picks and the fifth round got underway Saturday, as Pittsburgh quarterback Tom Savage landed with the Houston Texans with the 135th overall selection. Savage is technically the seventh quarterback taken in the draft, but sixth after considering Logan Thomas' true position in the NFL may be tight end.

Savage bounced around in college before landing in Pittsburgh, playing two years for Rutgers and a brief stint as a member of the Arizona Wildcats. Savage left Tuscon when Rich Rodriguez joined the program. The Pennsylvania native finished the 2013 season just shy of 3,000 yards with 21 touchdowns.

The Texans are trying to beef up their quarterback position, which was abysmal last season. Between Matt Schaub, Case Keenum and T.J. Yates, Houston had its worst completion percentage and yards per attempt totals since the early days of the franchise. The team currently has Yates, Keenum and Ryan Fitzpatrick under contract.
