Rams WR Stedman Bailey suspended 4 games for PED violation

St. Louis has announced their former third-round pick has violated the NFL’s performance enhancing substances policy.

Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports

Second-year St. Louis Rams wide receiver Stedman Bailey has been suspend four games of the 2014 NFL season for violating the league's performance enhancing substances policy, the team announced on Monday.

A source close to the team has told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network that Bailey did not take any performance enhancing drugs, but did not elaborate on what caused the failed test. Rapoport reports that the Rams have known about the impending suspension for “several months.”

St. Louis's prior knowledge of the incident makes their decision not to take a wideout in the NFL Draft that much more interesting. Despite having heavily invested in the position in the past couple of drafts, the Rams were rumored to be interested in adding another receiver, particularly Sammy Watkins out of Clemson. They used the No. 2 overall pick on Auburn offensive lineman Greg Robinson instead.

Bailey joined the team as a third round pick in the 2013 draft. He had just 17 receptions as a rookie (seventh on the team), going for 226 yards and no touchdowns. He was expected to compete for the No. 4 spot on the depth chart in 2014.

The suspension will cost Bailey $120,552 in base salary, according to Brian McIntyre.
