Michael Sam documentary postponed by OWN Network

Two days after it was announced, the documentary following the life of Michael Sam was postponed.

The multi-part documentary series slated to follow Michael Sam's attempt to make the St. Louis Rams roster was postponed on Friday, according to Darren Rovell of ESPN. The series was set to air on the Oprah Winfrey Network with OWN president Erik Logan and Sam's agent Cameron Weiss both saying the decision to postpone was made to allow Sam to focus on football.

“After careful consideration and discussion with the St. Louis Rams,” Logan said in a statement, via ESPN, “‘the Untitled Michael Sam Project’ has been postponed, allowing Michael the best opportunity to achieve his dreams of making the team.”

Weiss said the decision was made after talking with the Rams, and postponing the series will allow Sam to focus on football and to “ensure no distractions to his teammates.” While the series was postponed, it was not officially canceled and Weiss said everyone involved with the project remains committed to it. It’s unclear when or if the project would resume.

The documentary would have followed Sam’s life off the field as he worked to make it as the first openly gay player in the NFL. OWN does not have rights to NFL footage or trademarks so the coverage would be limited to Sam’s time away from the facility and would not include any footage of him during practice or any interviews with other Rams players or coaches.

Sam, a seventh-round pick, participated in his first NFL practice on Friday with the opening of Rams rookie mini-camp.
