Back in April, former Auburn running back Tre Mason vehemently denied reports that doctors at the NFL Combine had uncovered a wrist fracture that would require surgery. On Sunday, sources confirmed to Jene Bramel of Footballguys that the NFL Draft hopeful will indeed need surgery to fuse a bone in his wrist that has failed to heal correctly (h/t NFL.com's Ian Rapoport).

A month after Mason publicly denied needing surgery, new reports claim at least one team expects he’ll need to go under the knife.

Bramel reports that at least one team, and likely several, believe Mason will need surgery for a scaphoid fracture. He points out that the report doesn’t necessarily conflict with Mason’s claim that several teams have passed him in physicals. An orthopedic hand/wrist specialist said the bone may have scarred without fully healing, increasing the likelihood of re-injuring it.
NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport, who originally reported the injury in April, said on Sunday that he had spoken with six teams, all of which told him the lingering injury has had no affect on Mason’s draft stock. He’s currently ranked the No. 6 running back prospect by SB Nation and projected as high as the second round.
Mason was adamant that he did not need surgery after Rapoport’s initial report.
