NFL Draft results 2014: Khalil Mack goes to Raiders at No. 5

The Raiders took Khalil Mack, one of the best linebacker prospects to come out in years.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

With the No. 5 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders selected outside linebacker Khalil Mack out of the University of Buffalo.

Mack is arguably the best prospect in the entire draft, with some ranking him ahead of No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney. Mack is a physical freak at 6’3 and 250 pounds, able to outrun many offensive players, but with the strength to run them over as well. Last year, Mack tallied 10.5 sacks for the Bulls. For those who think he only played weak competition, Mack had 2.5 sacks in the season opener against Ohio State.

Levi Damien believes that Mack could line up at linebacker or defensive end for the Raiders and says the team has some flexibility with the pick:

The 6-3, 251 pound pass rushing linebacker has all the tools to be a standout player at the next level. He could play either defensive end or outside linebacker for the Raiders or perhaps both in different sets.

Mack came in at No. 4 on SB Nation’s top 200 big board, making him the top-ranked outside linebacker and second-ranked pass-rushing specialist.

For much of the country, Mack is nothing more than a rumor due to where he played. Unlike virtually all of the other top prospects, Mack played for a small school tucked away in Western New York. Still, the talent is undeniable. Mack projects to be a torrid pass-rusher who can hold his own and set the edge against the run.

Throughout his college career, Mack became a three-time All-MAC selection and a two-time All-American.
