NFL Draft results 2014: Jace Amaro goes No. 49 to Jets

Jace Amaro is the third tight end taken in the NFL Draft.

SB Nation 2014 NFL Draft

The New York Jets have selected Texas Tech tight end Jace Amaro with the No. 49 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Considered by many to be the best tight end in this year's class, Amaro led the FBS among tight ends with 106 receptions for 1,352 yards in addition to seven touchdowns. Heading into the draft, he was ranked the No. 2 tight end and No. 36 player overall in this year's class by SB Nation.

Eric Ebron of North Carolina was the only tight end rated higher, and he went on Day 1 of the draft, going to the Detroit Lions at No. 10. No other tight ends went in the first round.

Amaro racked up plenty of accolades during his time with the Red Raiders. He was a unanimous All-American selection in 2013, and was named first-team All-Big 12 the last two seasons. He also set an FBS record for receiving yards and yards per game by a tight end.

In three seasons with Texas Tech, Amaro put up 138 receptions for 1,818 yards and 13 touchdowns. The bulk of those numbers came from his junior year, in which he put up 106 receptions for 1,352 yards and seven touchdowns. He doesn’t have multiple years of high production, but that’s something we rarely see from tight ends in college regardless.

Combine results

Height: 6’5

Weight: 265 pounds

40-yard dash: 4.74 seconds

Bench Press: 28 reps of 225 pounds

Vertical jump: 33 inches

Broad jump: 118 inches

3-cone drill: 7.42 seconds

20-yard shuttle: 4.30 seconds

Amaro was one of the top five players at his position in every testing event he participated in except the 3-cone drill. Problem is, Eric Ebron was just as impressive, in particular running a 4.60 in the 40-yard dash. That speed is why some consider Ebron to be the better prospect, though there’s no question that both players are expected to become elite tight ends in the NFL.
