NFL Draft results 2014: C.J. Fiedorowicz goes to Texans to start 3rd round

Fiedorowicz goes to Houston as the fourth tight end taken in the 2014 NFL Draft.

SB Nation 2014 NFL Draft

The Houston Texans have drafted tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz with the No. 65 overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft. Fiedorowicz was ranked No. 75 on SB Nation's top 200 big board, which made him No. 5 among all tight ends, behind Troy Niklas, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Jace Amaro and Eric Ebron.

Fiedorowicz was named first-team All-Big Ten in 2013, and played four seasons at Iowa. He only got playing time in his final three years, however. Fiedorowicz caught 45 passes for 433 yards and a touchdown in 2012, but only 30 receptions for 299 yards in 2013. That 2013 campaign did bring six touchdowns, to his credit. He finished his college career with 91 receptions for 899 yards and 10 touchdowns.

At 6’5 and 265 pounds, Fiedorowicz fits the mold of the kind of tight ends we’re seeing flourish in the NFL these days. They’re all big-bodied guys and like them, Fiedorowicz also possesses the speed and agility to be the kind of matchup nightmare that they are. Fiedorowicz has a long way to go to get to that point, and until then, he’ll likely make it onto the field as a blocker who occasionally runs routes.

Combine results

Height: 6’5

Weight: 265

40-yard dash: 4.76

Bench press: 25

Vertical jump: 31 1/2

Broad jump: 9’8

20-yard shuttle: 4.26

3-cone drill: 7.10

Fiedorowicz had a strong showing at the scouting combine, which undoubtedly helped his stock. He's a very solid blocker, but is hoping to break out as a receiver in the NFL. He's got the big body that NFL teams like in a receiving tight end these days, but he's very raw and has shown inconsistent play over his college career, as evidenced by his drop in production between his junior and senior seasons.
