NFL Draft results 2014: Timmy Jernigan to Ravens at No. 48

The national champion is hoping his skills translate into a dominant NFL career.

SB Nation 2014 NFL Draft

With the No. 48 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens have selected Florida State Seminoles defensive lineman Timmy Jernigan. Jernigan came in at No. 43 on SB Nation's top 200 big board, which made him fifth among defensive tackles.

Jernigan is coming off a tremendous season, winning the National Championship with a thrilling victory over the Auburn Tigers in the Rose Bowl. Jernigan was terrific all year, compiling 63 tackles and 11 coming for a loss. It was somewhat unexpected, because Jernigan had never before been a starter.

The one knock on Jernigan was his conditioning. The Seminoles’ nose tackle had to leave the National Championship multiple times, raising questions. However, it came out later Jernigan was dealing with an illness, per NFL.com. At 6’2 and 299 pounds, Jernigan would incredibly be undersized as a nose tackle, but only sightly. At a 4-3 tackle spot, he’s perfect.

Ranked as the seventh-best defensive tackle prospect in the draft by SB Nation, Jones was considered by most to be a Day 2 selection.

Combine results

40-yard dash: 5.06 seconds

Bench: 27 reps

Vertical jump: 29.5 inches

Broad jump: 102 inches

20-yard shuttle: 4.83 seconds

In our SB Nation scouting report of Jernigan, Dan Kadar writes about Jernigan’s strength.

Pound-for-pound, there may be no stronger defensive tackle in the draft this year than Jernigan. He can handle double teams and still get disruption. Florida State would play Jernigan at the nose, especially on passing downs, and he found success in those situations because of his strength. As a tackler, Jernigan is about what you’d expect from a defensive tackle. Once he gets his hands on you, the play is through.
