Round 2 NFL mock draft 2014: 1st pick wide open for Texans

The only consensus among mock drafts heading into the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft is that there is no consensus. Case in point: The Texans are projected to select players from four different positions across five mock drafts.

SB Nation 2014 NFL Draft

Mock drafts typically don’t extend beyond the fist round, and Thursday’s first-round selections may have rendered pre-draft rankings obsolete. Curating and comparing draft rankings on one’s own can be a tiring task, so we’ve done some of the legwork for you.

Below is comparison of five second-round mock drafts -- SB Nation, Sports Illustrated, CBS Sports, NFL.com and Todd McShay for ESPN (Insider required) -- that reflect Thursday’s proceedings. A few things to note:

  • The Houston Texans could do anything. Four different positions were represented across the five mock drafts -- offensive tackle, quarterback, nose tackle and running back. Interestingly, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was mocked twice to Houston.
  • The Oakland Raiders are definitely taking Derek Carr at No. 36. Not one mock draft deviated from the trend.
  • The Washington Redskins really need an offensive tackle, and one of Joel Bitonio or Morgan Moses will be the pick.
  • Either Carr or Eastern Illinois' Jimmy Garoppolo is the best quarterback remaining. Beyond them, there's some debate over who should be next. SB Nation like Tom Savage (No. 42, Titans). Sports Illustrated digs Zach Mettenberger (also to the Titans). Toddy McShay drops AJ McCarron at No. 52 to the Arizona Cardinals.
  • Running backs and centers make their first appearances. A competitive bet would be which position will see more players drafted in the second round. The safe money appears to be on centers.
