Chuck Noll dies at 82

Legendary Pittsburgh Steelers coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Chuck Noll died Friday night at his home in Sewickley, Pa., per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He was 82.

Noll coached the Steelers from 1969-1991 and was at the helm of four Super Bowl-winning teams in the 1970s. In his 23 years coaching Pittsburgh, Noll was 193-148-1 with nine division titles and 12 playoff appearances. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993.

Noll was born in Cleveland and played parts of seven seasons in the NFL as a linebacker and guard. After his playing career ended in 1959, Noll was an assistant coach for eight seasons with the Chargers and Colts before joining Pittsburgh in 1969.

“Our goal wasn’t necessarily that year or the next year or the next year,” Hall of Fame defensive lineman Joe Greene said to the Cleveland Plain Dealer in 2008. “But the goal was to win the Super Bowl. He set it in place. The ideas and philosophy were implanted in us. ... What he was instilling in everybody there was the mind-set and the belief in what we were doing, and the belief in one another.”

No coach has won more Super Bowls than Noll’s 4.
