49ers, Colin Kaepernick will reportedly resume contract extension talks

San Francisco is believed to be sitting down with the quarterback’s agent this week, suggesting they don’t believe anything will come of the police investigation involving Kaepernick.

With a fresh heap of salary cap space at their disposal, the San Francisco 49ers are reportedly inviting Colin Kaepernick back to the negotiating table. The team plans on meeting with the star quarterback's agent this week in Santa Clara, Calif., according to Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee.

The last known time the two sides sat down was in Indianapolis during the NFL Combine in February. Talks were interrupted after Kaepernick became part of a police investigation into a "suspicious incident" in Miami centering around a woman who was taken from Kaepernick's hotel and later given a rape test. Police are still waiting on results from an unspecified "scientific" piece of information, but the fact that the Niners are willing to move forward on a long-term deal suggests they believe Kaepernick will be cleared of any wrongdoing.

Jim Harbaugh has stated he believes Kaepernick did nothing wrong and that he expects a “good resolution.” Police are hoping to conclude their investigation by the end of June.

Barrows notes the new contract should make Kaepernick, who is entering the final year of his four-year, $5.124 million rookie deal, the highest paid player in San Francisco.

The Niners are able to hand out that kind of money thanks to some recent contract shuffling. They gained $6.6 million from cutting cornerback Carlos Rogers in March and picked up another $2.6 million last month when linebacker NaVorro Bowman restructured his deal. After signing their 12 draft picks, San Francisco sits about $8 million under the 2014 cap.
