Sammy Watkins leaves game following apparent rib injury

The Bills rookie receiver has gone to the locker room after favoring his left side.

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Bills wide receiver Sammy Wakins has left Buffalo's Week 2 preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with a rib injury, the team confirmed on Saturday. Watkins, the fourth overall pick this year out of Clemson, has three catches for 21 yards through two preseason games. He did not record a catch in Saturday's game before going to the locker room.

Much of the Bills' expected success in Doug Marrone's offense this season seems to hinge on Watkins, considered to be one of the best receiver prospects to enter the draft in the last 10 years. Buffalo even traded receiver Stevie Johnson, long the team's best option at the position, to the San Francisco 49ers after selecting Watkins. They also added former Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Mike Williams in the offseason, but nobody can quite do what Watkins is capable of doing.

He’s already made a few highlight reel catches in practices and if the Bills want to surprise the AFC East this season, they’ll be keeping their fingers crossed that Watkins is alright.
