Philip Rivers and Colin Kaepernick will clash in a battle of two California teams with high expectations.

San Diego is coming off a loss against the defending Super Bowl-champion Seattle Seahawks. The Chargers' starters were beaten soundly, down 24-0 in the first half before they eventually fell, 41-14. San Francisco played an even worse game, opening up its new stadium in front of a packed house only to be drubbed 34-0 by the Denver Broncos. The 49ers coughed up four turnovers in the defeat while allowing points in each quarter.
More on the matchup: The Chargers have one of the best offenses in football behind Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates, which is why they focused on developing the defense in the offseason. San Diego was cash-strapped but was able to add Pro Bowl cornerback Brandon Flowers on a one-year deal. He will pair with rookie Jason Verrett on the outside, giving the Chargers a potentially formidable duo. How the secondary comes together throughout the remainder of the preseason is certainly worth paying close attention to.
The 49ers have many in San Francisco concerned. Jim Harbuagh's group has been pounded during the preseason, including a 34-0 defeat in the Levi's Stadium opener against the Denver Broncos. One of the main issues is the uncertainty at linebacker, with NaVorro Bowman still recovering from a torn ACL suffered in the NFC title game and Aldon Smith's suspension. Rookie Chris Borland appears to have the best shot at filling in for Bowman at inside linebacker alongside Patrick Willis.
