Brandon Meriweather suspended 2 games for illegal hits

Brandon Meriweather now has six violations of player safety rules, according to the NFL.

Washington safety Brandon Meriweather has been suspended for two games of the regular season for a violation of player safety rules, the league announced on Monday. He's getting more than a fine because this is his sixth violation of said rules, according to the league.

Meriweather's suspension likely comes from the illegal hit on Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith on Saturday. Early in the second quarter, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco threw to Smith, but the pass was broken up by Meriweather, who also hit Smith in the head.

He drew a penalty flag for the hit, but maintains that he was trying to “deliver a proper hit,” and that he wasn’t sure the play should have drawn a penalty, as reported by the Washington Post.

Meriweather served a one-game suspension for the same issue last season. He was originally suspended for two games, but it was reduced to one game after an appeal. It’s unclear if he’ll have that opportunity this time around, but it’s doubtful given his history.
