Texans owner Bob McNair declared healthy following battle with cancer

Houston’s owner got some terrific news after suffering a serious health scare.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair has been told by his doctors that he is in good health after dealing with cancer for the previous 10 months, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

McNair has spent portions of the last 10 months being treated at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Part of his treatment included undergoing an experimental procedure for chronic lymphocytic leukemia, which causes second-degree burns on the face, neck and collarbone throughout 30 radiation sessions. The burns were significant enough that McNair required skin grafts.

McNair, 77, says he has no regrets in regards to the painful treatment, per the piece.

“I’ve never been through anything like that, but two days ago, I was given a clean bill of health, so it was worth the pain and suffering,” McNair, 77, said Wednesday in his first public comments on his health issues. “I didn’t think I was going to die. I knew some did. I knew there were some rumors. That’s one of the reasons I’m talking about it.

McNair has owned the Texans since they joined the NFL in 2002, and had seen his team become a serious contender in recent years behind Matt Schaub, J.J. Watt and Arian Foster before a disastrous 2-14 campaign in 2013. The club is looking to rebound behind new head coach Bill O'Brien and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

“I’m not ill. I’m healthy. I’m not going anywhere. We’ve got Super Bowls to win.”
