Rob Gronkowski will play Week 1 for Patriots

According to New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, he is ready to go for his team’s Week 1 tilt against the Miami Dolphins.

Stew Milne-USA TODAY Sports

Tight end Rob Gronkowski says he will suit up for the New England Patriots' Week 1 game, according to Tom E. Curran of CSN New England.

Gronkowski tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee during a game against the Cleveland Browns on Dec. 8, 2013. The tight end underwent reconstructive knee surgery the following month and began his rehab process soon after.

Assuming the accuracy of Curran's report, Gronkowski's return represents great news for the Patriots. He led all New England receivers in receiving touchdowns from 2010-12, catching 38 over that span. Because a large part of quarterback Tom Brady's receiving corps is made up of players with less than three years of experience, having the services of an experienced, reliable target such as Gronkowski is critical to the Patriots' success. Had the tight end not been cleared to play, the team would have turned to Michael Hoomanawanui or the recently acquired Tim Wright.

The Patriots travel to Miami Sunday to take on the Dolphins.
