NFL picks and predictions 2014: Chiefs vs. Broncos

Nobody thinks the Chiefs will win their Week 2 matchup against the Broncos, it seems.

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs took the NFL by storm last season, but lost steam as it went on. Unfortunately, they didn't get off to quite as fast a start this year, as Alex Smith struggled and they wound up losing to the Tennessee Titans in Week 1. The AFC West rival Denver Broncos, on the other hand, downed the tough Indianapolis Colts without much issue and are now heavily favored in this one.

Kansas City actually challenged the Broncos for the division for much of the season, despite Peyton Manning leading a record-breaking offense. They'll need some more of that magic to hope to make the playoffs this year, but beating the Broncos in the early-goings would certainly help their cause.

If Smith rebounds, he can certainly do what he needs to do to put the Chiefs in a position to win. The Broncos don’t have a good secondary and while the Chiefs aren’t a high-powered offensive machine like the Broncos are, they do have a better defense which might help even things out. Still, there are few takers when it comes to Kansas City’s upset potential.

All eight of the experts for CBS Sports picked the Broncos to win. The 13 experts at ESPN all concurred, picking the Broncos, as did the two at Yahoo! Sports. Then there’s SB Nation’s experts:

As you can see, it’s unanimous among experts. The Broncos appear to be too good on offense for the Chiefs to keep up, regardless of how well their defense might play. Vegas agrees with the experts, too. The Broncos opened up as 12.5 favorites and could be had favored as much as 13 points later in the week, according to OddsShark.
