2014 NFL power rankings: Bills, Cardinals, Chargers surging into Week 3

After a close loss in San Diego, the Seattle Seahawks are no longer at the top of the power rankings, dethroned by Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos. Here’s how the rankings makers are valuing all 32 teams after two weeks of play.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

The king is already dead (sort of). After two weeks in the 2014 NFL season, the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks have dropped from the top spot in the power rankings after losing on the road to the San Diego Chargers. Was it the heat? Was it Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates? Or maybe it was just a bad day for the champs. Whatever the answer was, we'll know more next week when the Seahawks play host to the Denver Broncos, the new weekly power rankings leader.

The Broncos survived a close game against the Kansas City Chiefs. That's the second game in a row where Peyton Manning and Co. had to hold off a late comeback attempt from their opponents, something that has to be a concern considering next week's game. Either way, it's still early, and both the Seahawks and Broncos have plenty of time to look under the hood.

Meanwhile, the 2-0 Bengals are charging up the rankings thanks to a dominating defense and despite the potential loss of A.J. Green. With the rest of the AFC North in flux, the Bengals could be in for a long season near the top of the power rankings. How much success will they have without their superstar receiver?

And thanks to another big second-half comeback, the 2-0 Philadelphia Eagles maintain their spot as one of the NFL's early elite teams. Another 2-0 team that's turning heads early is the Carolina Panthers, who even managed to win their season opener with Derek Anderson under center.

There is also an epic battle brewing for cellar supremacy between the 0-2 Raiders, Jaguars, Buccaneers and Giants. The Giants are a relatively new entrant in the race for the bottom. After two games, Big Blue already has a league-worst -5 turnover differential, something that the new offensive system was supposed to fix after last season's disastrous performance by Eli Manning. Which team will separate itself from the pack next week and truly claim its rightful spot at No. 32?

The four polls we use:

We use four different rankings to compile our weekly average. The idea behind that is to try and get a wider sense of where all 32 teams are being valued with two weeks of play in the books. Our power rankings sources from from our in-house rankings, ESPN and NFL.com. We also factor in the DVOA rankings from Football Outsiders to add an objective statistical measurement to the formula.
