NFL security chief received Ray Rice tape from law enforcement, according to report

An anonymous source claims he sent video of Rice punching his fiancee to the league’s security chief.

An unnamed law enforcement official claims he sent the now-infamous video of Ray Rice punching his then-fiance in a casino elevator to NFL league security chief Jeffrey Miller in April, according to a recent AP report.

The official could not confirm that Miller ever watched the video, but said he did receive a voice mail from the league office confirming the package was received. The official allowed the AP to listen to the 12-second message, in which a woman reportedly says, “You’re right. It’s terrible.”

In a statement released Thursday night, Miller denied having received the video, according to Kevin Clark of the Wall Street Journal:

“I unequivocally deny that I received at any time a copy of the video and I had not watched it until it was made public on Sept. 8.”

The NFL has stated that none of its employees saw the video until the TMZ went public with it.

“Since the NFLPA and NFL have launched separate investigations into the league and the Ravens’ handling of Ray Rice’s case, I want to make a few things clear. No one from the NFL ever asked me for the inside-elevator video,” the official said Thursday. “I mailed it anonymously to Jeff Miller because he’s their head of security. I attached a note saying: `Ray Rice elevator video. You have to see it. It’s terrible.’ I provided a number for a disposable cellphone and asked for confirmation that it was received. I knew there was a possibility Mr. Miller may not get the video, but I hoped it would land in the right hands.

“My intention wasn’t to bring down Commissioner Goodell or anyone else at the NFL,” the he added.

That the official sent and received confirmation for the deliver is not new -- the AP reported it two weeks ago. At the time however, the anonymous official asked the AP not to report that the packaged was addressed directly to Miller.

After the initial report, the league stood by its long held stance that it had never seen the video, but Roger Goodell left the door open on the possibility that it was received and never passed along.

“If there’s a delivery sitting under someone’s desk there will be consequences,” the commissioner told Norah O’Donnell of CBS.

The AP notes that there are two NFL executives named Jeffrey Miller.
