Teddy Bridgewater suffers apparent ankle injury, will undergo MRI

Bridgewater was carted off the field late in the fourth quarter of a tight game against Atlanta.

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

Teddy Bridgewater had to be carted off the field late in the fourth quarter during Sunday's game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Atlanta Falcons. He suffered an apparent ankle injury on a third-down run toward the end zone from the 1-yard line. Bridgewater's return was announced as questionable and he did not return to the game.

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said after the game that Bridgewater will undergo an MRI, and that he was unsure if the quarterback would have been able to re-enter the game if given the opportunity. X-rays taken on the ankle revealed that Bridgewater suffered no structural damage, and appears to have suffered a sprain.

Bridgewater was in the midst of his first career regular season start. He had been performing well before leaving the game, going 19-for-30 passing for 317 yards. He scored a touchdown in the second quarter on a 13-yard run. Bridgewater started the game as a result of a season-ending injury to Matt Cassel.

Should Bridgewater be forced to sit, beleaguered Christian Ponder -- the Vikings' 2011 first-round draft pick -- would go under center for Minnesota. Ponder has yet to throw a pass this season. He was benched last season after throwing just seven touchdowns to nine interceptions in nine game appearances.
