NFL outlaws Greg Hardy’s face paint

The Kraken will have to go without his signature look from here on.

Sam Sharpe-USA TODAY Sports

The No Fun League is at it again. The signature -- and terrifying -- war paint look of Carolina Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy has been outlawed by the NFL, according to David Newton of ESPN.

Newton cites an image on the league’s updated uniform code that specifically lists Hardy’s face paint as a violation. Other violations listed include unbuckled chin straps, lack of knee pads and untucked jerseys.

The face paint is a key ingredient in Hardy’s bizarre on-field alter ego, which he himself has labeled “the Kraken.” Ever eccentric, the Pro Bowl pass rusher typically completes his gameday getup with freaky contacts and a piece of tape with Kraken scrawled on it over his name plate.

“That’s just the persona you have to live with,” Hardy told ESPN.com in March. “I have fun. I do what I want to do. It’s not going to stop now. It’s not going to change.

“I don’t think I’m a bad guy. I think I’m awesome.”

I’d bet that Hardy still finds a way to look terrifying in Week 1.
