Few expected the Philadelphia Eagles to do much other than be competitive, but some luck at the quarterback position ultimately led them into the playoffs. The Jacksonville Jaguars, on the other hand, had a small victory in the fact that they weren't the worst team in the division as expected. That's thanks to an impressively bad year from the Houston Texans.
Jaguars vs. Eagles 2014 game preview: The Nick Foles show is on in Philadelphia
Nick Foles got a full offseason to prepare as the starter, and he’s got what appears to be a solid opportunity to kick things off with a win against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the opener.

On Sunday, the Jaguars and Eagles open up their 2014-15 campaigns with a game at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The Eagles will be looking to get started with a win to get in front of the NFC East, and the Jaguars will just be hoping to get a step closer to besting their 4-12 record from last year.
Meet the Eagles
The Eagles started last season with some serious issues at quarterback. Michael Vick was the starter and Nick Foles was his backup, and it seemed unlikely the team would make a switch, even if Vick was playing poorly. Well, Vick wasn't playing great and ended up sustaining an injury that forced him out of multiple games. Foles came in and played extremely well, completing 64 percent of his passes for 2,891 yards with 27 touchdowns and two interceptions.
That's while playing in 13 games. Philadelphia is now hoping a full offseason with Foles as the starter will prevent him from regressing, and are once again hoping to survive on the back of an offense that was ranked ninth in the league in passing and first in the league in rushing last season. Defensively, the focus will be on a re-vamped secondary that includes former New Orleans Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins.
Meet the Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars insisted throughout training camp and the preseason that the plan was to sit rookie first-round pick Blake Bortles for the upcoming season. After Bortles put in a few solid performances, though, many assumed that there was a real competition going on. Bortles definitely outplayed Henne over the course of the preseason, but the Jaguars did stick to their guns, naming Henne the starter for Week 1.
Henne finished the preseason going 25 of 38 for 230 yards and a touchdown. He'll have to deal with a somewhat shaky offensive line and a relative lack of offensive weapons, which is made worse by the Justin Blackmon suspension. The Jaguars do have some defensive improvements to look forward to, with guys like Red Bryant, Chris Clemons and Dekoda Watson coming in via free agency. But it's an uphill battle on both sides of the football.
Injuries
Both teams are relatively healthy at this point. For the Jaguars, both kicker Josh Scobee and punter Brian Anger are appearing on the injury report, but both are expected to play. Offensive lineman Zane Beadles was limited in practice early in the week and is in the same boat. The only player who looks like he'll miss time is offensive tackle Austin Paztor, who is dealing with a hand injury that has kept him out of practice.
The Eagles don't have a whole lot to be concerned with at the start of the season. Wide receiver Riley Cooper could play a big role in this offense and he did appear on the injury report with an ankle injury. Cooper was a full participant in practice as early as Wednesday, however, and is expected to play.
