After a two-week search in which the San Francisco 49ers were linked to as many as 12 different candidates, the 49ers will promote from within. The team announced that defensive line coach Jim Tomsula has been named the next head coach.

The Niners will promote Jim Harbaugh’s replacement from within after interviewing several other candidates.

Jim Harbaugh and the Niners decided to part ways after a successful four-year run. Harbaugh has since signed up to coach his alma mater, the University of Michigan, while the Niners have taken their time talking to potential replacements like Tomsula, Adam Gase, Dan Quinn, Mike Shanahan and several others.

Tomsula was one of two internal candidates for the position, along with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Tomsula served as the team’s defensive line coach since 2007 and is the longest tenured member of the coaching staff. He’s reportedly well-liked and highly regarded within the organization, which is how he survived regime changes after new head coaches like Mike Singletary and Harbaugh were hired.
Tomsula did serve as the team's interim head coach after Singletary was fired during the 2010 season. The Niners blew out the Arizona Cardinals, 38-7, in Tomsula's only game as head coach. Who stays on staff with Tomsula remains to be seen. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman joined Rex Ryan in Buffalo while previous reports indicated Fangio did not want to stay in San Francisco unless it was as the head coach or the defensive coordinator for Mike Shanahan.
