The New England Patriots have filed tampering charges against the New York Jets regarding cornerback Darrelle Revis, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The NFL is officially looking into the situation.
Patriots file tampering charges against Jets
Jets’ owner Woody Johnson may have gotten his team in hot water for comments made regarding Darrelle Revis.

Jets owner Woody Johnson discussed Revis during his postseason press conference, saying the Jets “probably would have taken him” if he knew what Revis’ price would ultimately be and that he’d “love for Darrelle to come back.” Revis, who played for the Jets for the first six years of his career, was and still is under contract with the Patriots when Johnson spoke about him.
According to the NFL’s anti-tampering rules, no one employed by or otherwise affiliated with a team is permitted to express interest in a player who is under contract with or whose exclusive negotiating rights are held by another team. Revis is set to become a free agent if New England doesn’t pick up his $20 million option for the 2015 season.
If the Jets are found in violation of the league’s rules, they could face a fine or even the loss of a draft pick. Johnson apologized soon after he made the comments.
"I misspoke today when I commented on Darrelle Revis," Johnson explained. "I would never interfere in the contractual relationship of a player with another team and should not have used those words." Johnson said he also contacted Patriots owner Robert Kraft to explain his comments.
After his stint with the Jets, Revis spent one season with the Buccaneers before the team released him for cap space. The Jets to pursued him again before he ultimately signed with the AFC East rival Patriots.
