For the second time this season, the New England Patriots dominated the Indianapolis Colts, partly by being the more physical team. Jim Irsay knows it and wants to do something to make his team "tougher." The Colts' owner discussed the loss on Indianapolis RTV6.
Jim Irsay wants a ‘tougher’ Colts team
The Colts let the Patriots run through, around and over them in the AFC Championship.
“When you get to this level, this championship level, we have to be able to be a tougher team,” Irsay said. “We have to be able to stop the run. We can’t turn it over.
“Tonight it’s hard to feel the appreciation, but it’s there when you take in the whole season. We’re really disappointed. We knew this was a measuring stick that we wanted to get over, and we didn’t.”
In two meetings with the Patriots this season, the last of which being in the AFC Championship, the Colts were outrushed by a 423-102 margin in total yards. By letting New England run the ball so well, it allowed the Patriots to dominate the time-of-possession battle 37:49 to 22:11. That also keep Colts star quarterback Andrew Luck off the field while keeping Tom Brady on the field.
That’s a recipe for disaster, and the Colts’ loss Sunday reflected that.
