The Oakland Raiders are set to hire Bill Musgrave to be their new offensive coordinator, according to Mike Silver of NFL.com. Musgrave joins the staff of new head coach Jack Del Rio, who he worked for with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2003 and 2004.
Raiders to hire Bill Musgrave as offensive coordinator, per report
Bill Musgrave is expected to be the new offensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders. He’ll be tasked with developing Derek Carr and turning around one of the league’s worst offenses.

Del Rio was the head coach then as well, a position he held with Jacksonville until 2011. Unfortunately for Musgrave, he was let go after just two seasons, when the Jaguars were 29th in the league and last in the AFC in scoring in the 2004 season. At the time, the Jaguars had what many believed to an up-and-coming offense, featuring Fred Taylor, Jimmy Smith and quarterback Byron Leftwich.
Musgrave hasn't found success as an offensive coordinator anywhere in the NFL, either. He was fired from the Minnesota Vikings after the 2013 season, with the chief complaint being poor play calling and bad decision making. He then joined the Philadelphia Eagles as the quarterbacks coach this past season.
The task of fixing the Oakland offense will fall to Musgrave. The Raiders have yet to hire a defensive coordinator, but that was always Del Rio's specialty. Del Rio must have a lot of faith in Musgrave to bring him in at this point. It's not a terribly bleak situation for Musgrave, as he'll get to work with second-year quarterback Derek Carr.
Carr could develop into a very solid passer by the time it’s all said and done, but the Raiders had the worst offense in the league and scored the second-fewest points of all teams a season ago. It’s not going to be an easy job.
