Peyton Manning expected to return to Broncos, per report

Peyton Manning isn’t expected to retire and will likely return to the Broncos, pending a physical.

Peyton Manning is prepared to come back and play another season with the Denver Broncos pending his annual physical examination, according to a report from Woody Paige of the Denver Post.

Manning, 38, was reportedly mulling his future and considering retirement after the Broncos were eliminated from the postseason by the Indianapolis Colts. It was also revealed shortly after the game that Manning played the tail end of the season and into the postseason with a torn right quad that affected his ability to get velocity on his throws.

After the postseason disappointment, the entire Broncos coaching staff, including head coach John Fox, were let go and former Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak was hired as the a replacement. Kubiak told reporters on Tuesday that he has already spoken to Manning twice and that both he and John Elway hope the 13-time Pro Bowler returns to Denver.

Manning eclipsed Brett Favre’s record for career touchdown passes during the 2014 season, but is still over 2,000 yards away from Favre’s career passing yards record. Manning hasn’t finished with fewer than 4,000 passing yards in a season since his rookie year, so it likely wouldn’t take him long to surpass Favre in that category if he returns.

As part of the contract signed by Manning in March 2012, he is required to have a physical examination done once a year and, according to Paige, the Broncos have requested he inform them of his future plans by March 9. The team is due to pay Manning $19 million for the 2015 season and has until that date to release veteran players under contract.
