When Jason Garrett and his offensive coordinator, Scott Linehan, take the sidelines to coach the Pro Bowl, it probably won’t feel too different than coaching a normal game. That’s because the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff has a whopping six members of their offense playing for them in the NFL’s annual all-star game.
2015 Pro Bowl, Team Irvin coaches: Jason Garrett will be coaching a lot of familiar faces
Garrett and his Cowboys staff will have six of their own players on their team.
Unsurprisingly, Michael Irvin, one of the alumni pickers for the Pro Bowl squads, loaded up on players from his former team. Quarterback Tony Romo, running back DeMarco Murray and three of the offensive linemen who block for them -- Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick and Zack Martin -- are all suiting up for Team Irvin.
Garrett and Linehan, along with defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, special teams coach Rich Bisaccia and the rest of the Dallas staff, will be coaching them up.
For a while, it didn’t seem like that would be the case. As one of the two teams with the best records to be eliminated in the Divisional round of the playoffs, the Cowboys’ staff was designated to coach one of the Pro Bowl sides. But until Jan. 13, Garrett hadn’t signed a contract extension and Dallas was technically without a head coach. There was also heavy speculation that Marinelli was contemplating leaving the team, perhaps in favor of a reunion with Lovie Smith in Tampa Bay.
Both signed contract extensions and ultimately gave Team Irvin a heavy Cowboys presence. Garrett led the Cowboys to a 12-4 record and an NFC East title in 2014. They made the playoffs for the first time in five years, beating the Detroit Lions in the Wild Card round before falling to the Green Bay Packers.
