As the San Francisco 49ers get ready to visit the New York Giants under the primetime microscope of Sunday Night Football, receiver Anquan Boldin wants to clear up misconceptions about his relationship with his quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Even though the two teammates have been unable to get on the same page so far this season, Boldin insists they're getting along just fine.
Anquan Boldin has ‘frustrations’ with the 49ers, not Colin Kaepernick
Boldin is in the midst of the worst season of his career, but he insists he’s not taking out his frustrations on his struggling quarterback.
“Me and Kap are on great terms,” Boldin said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. “Our relationship hasn’t changed just because were not winning football games. I don’t have frustrations with Kap. I have frustrations with us as a team not doing what we’re capable of doing.”
The 49ers' 17-3 loss to the Packers at home in Week 4 may have been a low point of their 1-3 campaign, and it appeared as if Boldin glared at Kaepernick several times throughout the game. Boldin only caught three passes for 12 yards, and is on pace for the least productive year of his career. This season, Kaepernick's passer rating when targeting Boldin is a paltry 52.8 after being north of 100 in both 2013 and 2014.
Boldin maintained that it’s not his lack of production, but rather the team’s, that has left him dissatisfied.
“It’s frustrating when you know how good you are as a team, but you don’t play that way,” Boldin said. “Like last week, we had a great week of practice and to not have it transfer to the game is disappointing. So that’s where my frustration lies. That’s where it comes from.”
Through four weeks, the 49ers are dead last in the NFL in passing offense and second-worst in total offense. Kaepernick, 27, is struggling mightily during his fourth season as San Francisco’s starting QB. He’s only thrown for 727 yards in four games with two touchdown passes and seven interceptions. His numbers haven’t improved since 2012, when he completed 62.4 percent of his passes for 1,814 yards in seven starts.
Kaepernick’s success has always been predicated on mixing his strong arm with dynamic speed, but he’s also failed to make an impact in the running game this season. He’s averaging 5.9 yards per carry through the first quarter of the schedule, which is the second-worst of his career.
It's been a tumultuous year in San Francisco, and the team's poor start under new head coach Jim Tomsula may only amplify the dysfunction. So far, it seems as if Kaepernick is still on good terms with his No. 1 wide receiver. But if the losing persists, that could soon change.
