Last week the Colts turned heads with one of the worst special teams tricks of all time, a play completely botched in both design and execution. This week the Saints are playing the Colts, and they wanted to show how special teams fakes should work:
The Saints ran a beautiful fake FG to show the Colts that special teams doesn’t have to be an enormous abject failure
See, Colts? Special teams tricks are fun!
Saints kicker Zach Hocker goes all the way through with the fake -- he even pretends to kick a ball that isn't there. The Saints' holder isn't the punter, it's backup QB Luke McCown, who's good at throwing because he's a quarterback. And tight end Benjamin Watson pretends to block just long enough for the Colts to forget about him. McCown feels some rather heavy pressure, but he stays cool and hits Watson for a 25-yard gain down to the goal line.
The Saints scored on the next play. Special teams fakes can be good if you are smart about when to use them and put the right players in position to do the right things and also don’t mess everything up enormously.
