Calvin Johnson appeared to have a go-ahead touchdown for Detroit with less than two minutes to go against the Seahawks ... but with less than a yard to go before paydirt, Kam Chancellor punched the ball free from Johnson:
Kam Chancellor forced a Calvin Johnson fumble a yard away from a go-ahead touchdown
The Lions were a yard away from their first win of the year... and then Kam Chancellor made an amazing play.
The ball bounced out of the end zone for a touchback. As you can see, the ball was clearly out thanks to Chancellor’s punch:
Brilliant, perhaps game-saving ballhawking by Chancellor. And heartbreaking for Johnson, who was so close to getting the Lions a chance at their first win of the year. Chancellor had been haunting Johnson all night with a big hit earlier.
Yeah, I’d say the Seahawks should be happy Kam Chancellor is back.
Note that K.J. Wright bops the ball out of bounds at the end of the play:
There is a rule against “batting or punching” the ball in either end zone, which if called would have awarded the Lions the ball and a first down on the half-yard line. Lions fans can stew about this one.
The Seahawks held on for a 13-10 win. Seattle’s defense didn’t allow a touchdown for a second straight game -- Detroit’s only TD came on a Russell Wilson fumble.
