NFL denies it told Browns that Tramon Williams wasn’t offsides on missed Chargers field goal

The Chargers won the Week 4 matchup after making the second field goal attempt.

Cleveland Browns cornerback Tramon Williams claims the NFL informed the team that the offsides flag against him on Sunday was the incorrect call. The 5-yard penalty gave Chargers kicker Josh Lambo a mulligan after he missed a last-second field goal attempt and led to a 30-27 win for San Diego.

“It came back that I wasn’t offside,” Williams said to Mary Kay Cabot of the Northeast Ohio Media Group after informing her that the Browns had requested that the league review the call. “I moved when the ball was snapped.”

The claim, however, was denied by NFL vice president of football communications Michael Signora.

“The video we have is inconclusive because we do not have a shot from the line of scrimmage,” Signora wrote in an email to Cabot. “The person with the best view was the line judge who made the call on the field.”

Another source told Cabot that no request for a review of the call had been made by Cleveland and that the NFL had not reviewed any plays from Sunday’s Browns-Chargers game. The Browns declined to comment to Cabot about Williams’ remarks.

Lambo’s first attempt came from the 29-yard line with two seconds remaining and the game tied at 27. He missed wide right but Williams was flagged for being offsides.

“The coaches sent in the tape questioning it, because like I said, it was close and I thought I got a good jump,” Williams told Cabot on Wednesday. “It was time to do or die at the end of the game. I had gathered all the information throughout the game, and I was like ‘this is my time.’

“And sure enough, I got a good jump on it.”

Lambo's second attempt, with no time on the clock and from 34 yards away, sailed through the uprights and gave the Chargers, who improved to 2-2, a 30-27 win. With the loss the Browns fell to 1-3. They'll face the Ravens in Baltimore Sunday.

Williams’ remarks come on the heels of a blown call costing the Lions a chance at defeating the Seahawks Monday night.
