The Indianapolis Colts seemed to finally right the ship this past Sunday with their 27-24 win over the Denver Broncos. However, an injury to their franchise quarterback may set them back once again. The team announced Tuesday that Andrew Luck will miss 2-6 weeks with a lacerated kidney and other injuries.
Andrew Luck out 2-6 weeks with lacerated kidney
The Colts quarterback suffered injuries during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Broncos.
“The injuries happened at the end of an early fourth quarter scramble when Andrew was doing everything he could to get us the win,” Colts head coach Chuck Pagano said in the team’s press release. “Andrew was sore after the game and was feeling a little worse Monday afternoon so we sent him to get tests.”
Those tests revealed that Luck suffered a lacerated kidney as well as a partial tear of an abdominal muscle. Though the team does not believe the injuries will require surgery, Luck’s absence could put the Colts’ one-game lead in the AFC South in jeopardy.
Though Pagano did not reveal the exact play Luck hurt his kidney, it appears the injury most likley occurred on the first snap of the fourth quarter. On the play, Luck absorbed two hits, one from defensive end Vance Walker to the back and another from linebacker Danny Trevathan to his midsection.
Luck missed two games earlier in the season while dealing with a shoulder injury. Veteran signal caller Matt Hasselbeck started each of those games and led Indianapolis to back-to-back victories. Hasselbeck is expected to take Luck's place again while he recovers from his latest injuries.
The silver lining for the Colts is the schedule. The team has a bye in Week 10, followed by a five-game stretch that includes only two opponents with winning records. Even if Luck misses the full six weeks, Indy may still find itself in position for a playoff berth.
