Titans LB fined for Drew Brees hit that made Brian Orakpo erupt

Tennessee’s David Bass will lose $17,363.

Titans linebacker David Bass has been fined $17,363 by the NFL for an illegal hit on Saints quarterback Drew Brees last Sunday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Bass, a third-year player out of Missouri Western State, hit Brees in the helmet on a rush with 12:22 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Titans’ eventual 34-28 win. Bass sacked Brees, but was flagged for roughing the passer. Replays showed that Bass’ helmet did make contact with Brees’ face mask.

Bass' teammate, Brian Orakpo, received two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties following the play after vehemently protesting the call.

Brees was left with a bloody mouth and on Wednesday told reporters that he had to get stitches afterwards.

“It was the one where they got the flag, it was down in the red zone, guy kind of got a clean shot on me, hit me right in the jaw,” Brees told reporters, via NOLA.com. “So I ended up getting stitches and kind of had a lemon-sized swelled up there for a little bit. But I’m fine, obviously we ended up getting a little bit closer to the end zone because of that, ended up getting a touchdown and taking an 8-point lead. So listen, that’s a part of the game sometimes.”

The sack would have been Bass’ first of the season.

The Titans, 2-6, welcome the undefeated Panthers to Nashville this Sunday.
