NFL boosts security for Sunday games after attacks in Paris

The league “strongly recommends” that fans not bring bags to games this weekend.

After Friday’s terror attacks in Paris, which included a suicide bombing outside the stadium of the France-Germany soccer game, the NFL announced it will increase security measures at stadiums this weekend.

“We are closely monitoring events and have been in communication with the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI, which have informed us that there are no known threats against NFL stadiums,” the league said in a statement issued Saturday afternoon. “There will be an increased security and law enforcement presence both inside and outside stadiums and in the parking lots of our stadiums this weekend.”

The statement stressed that their current security plan has been endorsed by the Department of Homeland Security since 2008. However, they will be screening fans more carefully and “strongly recommend” that they not bring bring bags of any kind to the games. If a bag is “essential,” it must be made of clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and not exceed 12” x 6” by 12”.

Some Friday night games in both the NHL and NBA took place with increased law-enforcement presence, and that was expected to continue through the weekend.
