With Tony Romo set to come off injured reserve this week the Dallas Cowboys have released quarterback Brandon Weeden, the team announced on Tuesday.
Cowboys release Brandon Weeden to make room for Tony Romo
Romo is set to start this week in Miami.
Weeden, who was drafted by the Browns No. 22 overall in 2012, was signed to a two-year deal by the Cowboys in March 2014. He started one game last season and three this year after Romo broke his left clavicle Week 2 against the Eagles.
In his three starts, Weeden completed 71 percent of his passes for 666 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions, but the Cowboys dropped all three games and eventually brought in Matt Cassel to take the 32-year-old Weeden's spot.
Cassel is 0-4 as the Cowboys starter. He’s completed 62 percent of his passes for 809 yards and has thrown four touchdowns and five interceptions.
Before the injury, Romo had completed 75 percent of his passes for 551 yards. He returns to a 2-7 Cowboys team that trails the Giants by 2.5 half games for first place in the NFC East. His first game back will be Sunday in Miami. The Cowboys' season isn't over, but they need to put together a huge run to make the playoffs.
On Tuesday, Romo made it clear that’s what he plans on doing.
