If anybody wants proof about the cruelty of professional football, they should look no further than the Baltimore Ravens. All of the Ravens' seven losses this season have been decided by one possession, but last week's was almost certainly the most frustrating. In the final seconds of their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, left tackle Luke Joeckel didn't appear to be set when Blake Bortles snapped the football. If the penalty had been called, a 10-second runoff would've occurred and the Ravens would've escaped with the 20-19 victory.
Rams vs. Ravens 2015 picks and predictions: Baltimore favored to get 3rd win
In a season that’s been riddled with tough losses, the Ravens may be coming off their toughest defeat yet.
But the referees missed the call and the play was allowed to go on. Elvis Dumervil was subsequently flagged for a 15-yard facemask penalty, which set up the game-winning field goal for Jacksonville. The Ravens fell further into the cellar of the AFC North, though it wasn't entirely their own fault.
Though their playoff hopes are dashed, the Ravens may channel all of their angst and take out their frustrations on the St. Louis Rams Sunday. Joe Flacco turned the ball over three times in the loss against Jacksonville last week but threw three touchdowns as well. The Ravens may be playing with a depleted receiving corps, but they're still 15th in the league in points scored.
The Rams would yearn for that kind of offensive output, as they've scored the third-fewest points in the NFL through 10 weeks. Head coach Jeff Fisher will start Case Keenum for the first time this season Sunday in favor of Nick Foles, who has a putrid 56.6 completion percentage and 75.9 quarterback rating in 2015.
Like most weeks, rookie running back Todd Gurley will likely have to carry the bulk of the Rams' offensive load. But he only finished with 45 yards last week and will be facing a respectable Ravens run defense, which is holding opponents to under 100 yards per game.
Coupling the frustration the Ravens must be feeling with the Rams’ offensive ineptitude would seem to point to a win for Baltimore. And most of the experts agree. The ESPN panel favors the home team by an 8-5 margin, while six of CBS Sports’ eight-man crew feel the same.
Here at SB Nation, six of our eight experts also think the Ravens will oust the Rams for their third win of the season.
