It may be too late for Tony Romo to save the Dallas Cowboys' season, but at least he can attempt to bring them back to respectability.
NFL picks and predictions, Cowboys vs. Dolphins 2015: Tony Romo expected to lead Dallas to victory
Romo is back in action for the first time since Week 2 as the Cowboys look to win for the first time since then.
The Cowboys had Super Bowl aspirations at the start of the year, but now they've turned into a sideshow. Seemingly every week there is a new off-field incident, from Dez Bryant lashing out at the media to the ongoing controversy surrounding Greg Hardy.
Dallas hasn't won a game since Romo went down with a broken clavicle in Week 2, though the team has come close in each of its last two contests. The Cowboys dropped an overtime thriller to the Philadelphia Eagles two weeks ago and fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Sunday after Jameis Winston ran into the end zone for a late touchdown. Dallas only mustered six points at Tampa Bay and has averaged just 14.2 points over its last five games.
Romo, who is 14-2 in his last 16 starts, will likely aim to reengage Bryant in the offense. Bryant recorded 104 receiving yards against the Eagles, but has been held to just 57 yards combined in his other two games since returning from a broken foot. The struggling Dolphins secondary could be a soft landing spot for Romo in his first week back.
Much like the Cowboys, the 4-5 Dolphins are in the cellar of their division, but are still very much in the AFC Wild Card race. Interim head coach Dan Campbell has gotten more out of the Dolphins than his predecessor Joe Philbin. Miami has gone 3-2 under his watch and held off the Eagles last week when safety Reshad Jones intercepted Mark Sanchez in the end zone.
In addition to an improved defense, the Dolphins' offense has been playing better as well. Ryan Tannehill has posted QB ratings north of 90 in each of the last two games.
But if Romo can resuscitate the Cowboys’ offense, it’s difficult to imagine the Dolphins being able to keep up. Most of the experts are picking the Cowboys to break their losing streak. It’s 9-4 in favor of Dallas at ESPN, while CBS Sports’ panel is going with Romo’s team by a 5-3 margin.
Six of our eight experts at SB Nation also think Dallas will win for the first time in seven contests.
