The New York Jets are either exceeding or falling short of expectations depending on where you stood before the season got underway. Todd Bowles' team has looked great at times, beating the teams they're expected to beat, but they haven't put up much of a fight against teams like the New England Patriots and Oakland Raiders.
Jets vs. Texans 2015 live stream: Time, TV schedule and how to watch online
The Texans will be without Brian Hoyer when they face the Jets on Sunday.
One thing that went right for them thus far is the decision to roll with Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback. Well, it was essentially forced on them when Geno Smith got sucker-punched before the start of the regular season, but they have stuck with Fitzpatrick even with Smith healthy, and he is playing well.
Fitzpatrick has completed 59.7 percent of his passes for 1,983 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He has been sacked seven times. He's not playing great football, but he's keeping the Jets in most games and has been reliably finding receivers Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker.
He will have his hands full against the streaking Houston Texans when the two teams meet on Sunday.
Houston hasn't allowed a touchdown in its last two games, and has allowed 12 points in said games in total. They won both of those games, and that has a lot to do with the play of quarterback Brian Hoyer, who replaced Ryan Mallett after he struggled. Mallett himself replaced Hoyer after a bad Week 1 and the Texans have come full circle.
Hoyer is playing well now, and the Texans would be in a good place, if not for the fact that he is dealing with a concussion. Hoyer experienced memory loss following the team's last game and the Texans ruled him out for Sunday's game. That means T.J. Yates will be getting the start at quarterback, with former Dallas Cowboys backup Brandon Weeden being the primary reserve.
Hoyer has taken care of the football well this season, throwing 13 touchdowns against four interceptions. Yates got his first real playing time of the season when Hoyer suffered the concussion. He completed five of 11 passes for 69 yards and a touchdown, which allowed the Texans to beat the then-undefeated Cincinnati Bengals. It was a huge win, but Yates is still a big question mark at this point.
For his career, Yates has played in 15 games, completing 60.2 percent of his passes for 1,233 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions. He took the bulk of his snaps as a rookie in 2011, and attempted just 36 passes over the past three seasons with the Texans and Atlanta Falcons.
Yates will be facing a Jets defense that ranks fourth in the league in yards allowed. They have played great football this season, though the pass defense has lagged behind the run defense. They have allowed 230.3 passing yards per game, good for eighth in the league. Houston is no pushover in that vein, allowing just 222.3 passing yards per game, good for fourth-best in the league. Yards will be hard to come by for both Fitzpatrick and Yates on Sunday.
