Marshawn Lynch inactive vs. 49ers

Lynch won’t play due to an abdomen injury.

Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch won’t play against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Lynch is dealing with an abdomen injury and was listed as questionable on the official injury report Friday.

That designation is typically supposed to denote a 50 percent chance of playing, but it is the same listing Lynch had the previous week and he played in that game. Head coach Pete Carroll said Lynch was expected to play, so it’s somewhat of a surprise that he’s out.

This is just the fourth game in six seasons with the Seahawks that Lynch will miss. He also sat out two games earlier this season.

Lynch did have a limited snap count in his last game, a 39-32 loss to the NFC West rival Arizona Cardinals. He carried the ball just eight times for 42 yards and a touchdown, and caught one pass for 8 yards. He ran well when he was active, and was coming off consecutive games of 20-plus carries prior to that.

It’s been kind of a down year for Lynch, due in part to various injuries. He has eclipsed 100 yards rushing just once this season, and only has three touchdowns. He’s well on his way to finishing with his worst yardage total since 2010. Since that year, he has put up over 1,200 yards each season, but he has just 417 yards in seven games this season.

Still, the Seahawks will be shorthanded against a 49ers team that ranks 19th in the league against the run. Thomas Rawls is set to get the start. The rookie has a 5.6 yards per carry average this season, and 395 yards on 71 carries.
