Doug Martin racks up 235 yards vs. Eagles but no touchdowns

Martin tallied the second-most rushing yards ever for a player who didn’t score a touchdown.

Doug Martin racked up 235 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles, but didn't score any touchdowns, coming just 2 yards shy of the record held by Barry Sanders for rushing yards in a game without a touchdown.

The record for rushing yards in a game is 296 yards, set by Adrian Peterson in a 2007 game, but he managed three touchdowns in that game. In a 1994 game, Sanders tallied a career-best 237 yards and no scores against the Buccaneers.

Martin's 235 yards on Sunday doesn't represent his career best, as he managed to pick up 251 yards in a game against the Oakland Raiders in his rookie season. Martin hadn't even reached 150 yards in a game since and while he managed to tally three consecutive 100-yard games earlier in 2015, he eclipsed 100 yards just twice in the two seasons prior and was a consistent subject of trade rumors.

The huge day on Sunday for Martin launched him to over 900 rushing yards in 2015 with six games still left to be played. Peterson is the only other running back over 900 and needs just 39 yards against the Green Bay Packers to be the first to 1,000 rushing yards in 2015.

Martin also came just shy of breaking the record for rushing yards in a game against the Eagles. Jim Brown and Emmitt Smith are tied for the record with 237 yards each.

Both records could have been Martin’s if not for negative rushing yards late in the game. Martin had 240 yards on 24 carries, but lost 5 yards on his final three touches to finish with 235 yards.
