Ravens claim Jimmy Clausen after placing Joe Flacco on IR

On Monday, the Bears cut Clausen and promoted David Fales.

The Chicago Bears announced the release of quarterback Jimmy Clausen on Monday to make room for David Fales to be promoted from the practice squad to the active roster. The following day, Clausen was claimed by the Baltimore Ravens after they placed starting quarterback Joe Flacco on injured reserve.

Clausen will be reunited with former Bears head coach Marc Trestman, who is currently the offensive coordinator for the Ravens.

According to current Bears head coach John Fox, the motivation for the roster move was that there was interest from another team in signing him away. Trestman was also the head coach in Chicago when Fales was drafted in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Clausen, 28, has started just two games in the last five seasons after starting 10 games as a rookie for the Carolina Panthers. A second-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Clausen threw just three touchdowns with nine interceptions as a rookie and never played for the Panthers again after they selected Cam Newton with the first pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

As a backup with the Bears, Clausen has twice been asked to start due to injuries for Jay Cutler and most recently took over in a 26-0 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3. He finished that game 9-of-17 passing for 63 yards.

Fales, 25, has yet to see action in a regular season game and spent almost his entire rookie season on the practice squad. He was also added to the team's active roster in December after the New England Patriots attempted to sign him, according to the Chicago Tribune.
