Jets reportedly cut LB Quinton Coples after incident on team flight

Coples will suit up for the Dolphins against the Jets Sunday.

Mark L. Baer-USA TODAY Sports

There appears to be more to Quinton Coples' sudden release from the New York Jets than the team is letting on. According to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York, Coples was involved in an incident on the team flight on the way back from Houston last Sunday night. He was waived 12 hours after the plane had landed.

Coples has seen his playing time decrease over the last couple of months and was on the field for a season-low five snaps in the Jets' loss to the Texans last week. The Dolphins claimed the 2012 first-round pick Tuesday and will take on the Jets Sunday. Coples said he's looking forward to taking on his former team.

“It’s going to be crazy,” Coples said, via ESPN. “Being there for the last three years and then going to the other side of the stadium on the visiting side should be quite interesting. But my job is to get in there and help this team get a win. That’s what I’m here for.”

If Cimini's report is correct, Coples is the second player who the Jets have waived for an off-field incident this season. New York cut linebacker IK Enemkpali in training camp after he sucker punched quarterbacked Geno Smith in the locker room and broke his jaw. Tensions may be running high in New York, as the Jets have lost four of their last five contests and are now on the outside of the AFC playoff picture.

Coples, 25, has never recorded more than 25 tackles in his four seasons with the Jets. He has four tackles in 10 games this year.
