Chris Johnson reportedly suffered fractured tibia vs. 49ers

Johnson and Ellington left the game in the second half.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Arizona Cardinals running backs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington left Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers with injuries. Johnson went down with a knee injury and Ellington sustained a foot injury, both in the second half. The Cardinals labeled both players as questionable to return to the game, but neither did return and both needed to get MRIs after the game.

Johnson has a fractured tibia, according to Jay Galzer of Fox Sports. The Cardinals don’t know how long that will keep him off the field but it’s definitely bad news for the team. There is no information on Ellington’s injury just yet.

Prior to the injuries, Johnson had just 17 yards on 12 touches, while Ellington had five carries for 24 yards. Ellington also had three receptions for 22 yards. Both players have been playmakers for the Cardinals this season.

Johnson leads the Cardinals with 184 carries for 797 yards and three touchdowns. Ellington is behind him with just 31 carries for 223 yards and three touchdowns of his own. Johnson has a per-carry average of 4.3 yards while Ellington is averaging 7.2 yards.

Rookie David Johnson should be the primary back with those players out. Johnson, a third-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, has 27 carries for 118 yards and three touchdowns this season. He also has 17 catches for 233 yards and three touchdowns. Finally, he has 551 yards and a touchdown on kickoff returns.
