49ers sign running Travaris Cadet, release Pierre Thomas

The team lost Reggie Bush to an MCL injury two weeks ago.

The 49ers have signed free agent running back Travaris Cadet to a one-year deal, the team announced on Tuesday. To make room for Cadet, San Francisco released running back Pierre Thomas, who it had signed just one week earlier.

The shuffling of runners comes in the wake of the season-ending MCL injury Reggie Bush suffered two weeks ago.

Cadet, 26, went undrafted after graduating from Appalachian State in 2012. He was signed that offseason by the Saints, and spent two seasons in New Orleans. This offseason he signed with the Patriots as a free agent, but was released after one game.

For his career, Cadet has rushed 11 times for 37 yards and caught 46 balls for 347 yards and two touchdowns.

Thomas, 30, had yet to play a game this season prior to being signed by the 49ers. He was released by the Saints in March. In Week 9 against the Flacons, he ran the ball four times for 12 yards.

Cadet will likely serve as backup to Carlos Hyde, who also missed the 49ers' Sunday loss to the Rams due to a foot injury and is questionable going forward. Mike Davis, the team's third-string running back, is also injured after fracturing his hand on Sunday. Former rugby star Jarryd Hayne, who was released last week, was re-signed to the practice squad. Cadet, the recently signed Shaun Draughn and Kendall Gaskins will be the only healthy running backs on the roster.

The 3-6 49ers are coming off a 17-16 win over the Falcons. They have a bye this week and will face the Seahawks Nov. 22 in Seattle.
