With quarterback Josh McCown dealing with sore ribs, the Cleveland Browns will have a different quarterback under center when the team takes the field this Thursday. Head coach Mike Pettine said Wednesday morning that second-year quarterback Johnny Manziel will start against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Browns will start Johnny Manziel Thursday night
The 2014 first-round pick will start in place of starter Josh McCown against the Bengals.
McCown injured his ribs during the Browns' 34-20 loss to the Arizona Cardinals this past Sunday. Head coach Mike Pettine would not reveal whether the X-rays came back negative but classified McCown as "day-to-day" for Week 9. The short week further complicates the matter. If McCown cannot suit up, Manziel will get his first start since Week 2, a game the Browns won over the Tennessee Titans.
Since entering the league as the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, Manziel has completed 46 of his 85 passes (54.1 percent) for 568 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions, good for a passer rating of 72.1. Manziel has also rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.
