The New York Giants have lost five games by way of losses that occurred in the final two minutes of football games. They sit at 5-7 on the season, but due to the weakness of the NFC East, they are tied for first place with both Washington and the Philadelphia Eagles in the division.
Giants vs. Dolphins 2015 live stream: Time, TV schedule and how to watch online
The Giants are trying to keep their playoff hopes alive, and they have to get through the Dolphins Sunday.
Every game from here on out could make or break their shot at making the postseason. It's been a complicated season filled with disappointment for Tom Coughlin and the Giants, a team that hasn't made the playoffs in three consecutive years. But with four games to play, the Giants can easily separate themselves with their rivals. The Dallas Cowboys, at 4-8, are also in the discussion.
Coughlin's future with the organization and in the league as a whole is murky at best. He's led the Giants to a pair of Super Bowl titles, but questionable decisions have led to many of the team's losses over the past few seasons. The Giants have been completely unable to close out games in the final quarter.
New York lost to the New England Patriots, 27-26, then to Washington by just four points, and in their last game they fell to the New York Jets in overtime. That's an eight point differential over the past three games, all of which have been losses.
But winning the NFC East is still a possibility. New York split the season series against Dallas and Washington, and with a pivotal game against Philadelphia set up for Week 17 (the same week the Cowboys and Washington will play each other), they can split that series as well. But the remaining schedule includes very tough games against the Carolina Panthers and Minnesota Vikings.
In other words, they can't afford to lose their Monday Night Football game against the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins hold a 5-7 record like the Giants, but they are in fourth place in the AFC East and are also well out of the race for a wild card spot. Interim head coach Dan Campbell has led the Dolphins to a few wins since Joe Philbin was fired just four games into the season, but there isn't much confidence in the team these days.
The Dolphins are not technically out of the race for the postseason, but with four games to play, it’s not looking likely. They would need to win every game and benefit from a whole lot of unexpected losses from other teams in the final four weeks of the season.
Their remaining schedule isn't the toughest, at least. The Giants are not considered top competition, and neither are the San Diego Chargers or Indianapolis Colts. But if winning out is the goal, Miami will certainly have its hands full with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in Week 17. The Patriots dominated the Dolphins when they played in Week 8, winning 36-7.
But the Dolphins gave their support to Ryan Tannehill this offseason and he'll be playing his hardest to try and play spoiler for the Giants and give Miami something to be excited about at the end of the season.
