Pending an actual decision on what will happen with a new stadium in Los Angeles, the San Diego Chargers could be playing their final game at Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday when they host the Miami Dolphins. If indeed it is a sendoff, they'll try and make it a good one, but they have already been eliminated from playoff contention for the fifth time in six seasons.
NFL picks and predictions, Dolphins vs. Chargers 2015: Experts split on matchup
The Chargers and the Dolphins aren’t in playoff contention, but both teams have reasons to fight on Sunday.
The Chargers have also lost five consecutive games at home, one shy of the franchise record set in 1975. The Chargers have played in San Diego since 1961, and have lost eight of their last nine games overall. This is their first time since 2003 recording double digit losses in a season.
But the Dolphins, at 5-8, have not fared much better this season. They aren’t in playoff contention at this point in the season, and with an interim head coach the future is murky. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill received a big contract extension this offseason and has played well enough for the Dolphins to be happy with his play going forward, but there are many big question marks across the roster as the end of the regular season approaches.
Sunday’s game should be an interesting contest between the two, though there isn’t anything of substance on the line except for draft positioning. Both teams would benefit from a loss, but with jobs on the line in Miami, they will certainly be pushing hard.
Experts haven’t come to a consensus on the game in San Diego. At CBS Sports, five of the eight experts think the Chargers will win it, while seven of the 13 experts with ESPN think they will, as well. Here at SB Nation, five of the seven experts picking think the Dolphins will win it, though the OddsShark Computer predicts a Chargers victory.
